Once a marine system passes a few hundred litres, or one sump feeds several tanks, carbon stops being an occasional purchase and becomes a monthly consumable. Quantum Bio-active Carbon 2.5kg (SKU: QA632500) is the bulk pack of the Reef Essential granular carbon, roughly 5 litres of media, sized so a 500 L display or a small frag rack gets months of changes from one purchase. The carbon itself began life as a treatment stage for ultra-pure drinking water, and reef keepers use it for the same reason: it takes dissolved organics, colour and toxins out of the water without giving anything back.

The pore structure carries a larger proportion of macropores than a standard carbon, so bulky organic molecules such as the compounds corals use against each other are adsorbed rather than just skimmed off the surface. Those pores also give nitrifying bacteria a home, so a bag that has been in the sump for a fortnight is doing biological work as well as chemical work. Quantum states the media does not leach phosphate and does not release adsorbed molecules, which makes it forgiving in systems where maintenance runs a week late.

When to Use

• Multi-tank systems: A shared sump on a rack of tanks can draw its monthly carbon from one pack instead of several small ones.
• Large mixed reefs: Keeps colour and dissolved organics down in displays where soft, LPS and SPS corals share the water.
• Heavy-feeding fish-only tanks: Controls odour and organic load in predator and FOWLR systems fed generously.
• Recovery after treatment: The heavy-metal rate clears copper or medication residue from a quarantine or display volume.

Placement & Flow Guide

• Pre-rinse every batch: Rinse in RODI water until the run-off is clear so fines stay out of the aquarium.
• Monthly rate per 100 L: 15 g (30 mL) lightly stocked, 25 g (50 mL) moderately stocked, 50 g (100 mL) heavily stocked.
• Metal removal rate: 250 g (500 mL) per 100 L when the goal is stripping heavy metals.
• Where it goes: A high-flow spot in the sump, or a media reactor on its slowest setting; swap the carbon every month or as the water tells you.
