Description
Red Sea Reef Spec Carbon 1000ml — Litre pack of reef-grade activated carbon with filter bag
A litre of carbon is about ten standard changes on a 200 L reef, which is a year of clear water from one pack. Red Sea Reef Spec Carbon 1000ml (SKU: RED529) is the 1000 mL size of Red Sea’s REEF-SPEC Carbon, the highly activated carbon Red Sea calls the ultimate choice for marine and reef aquariums because of its technical characteristics. Its optimised granule size and combined micro- and macro-porous structure deliver a very high total adsorption capacity and quick removal of the organic pollutants that build up in reef water, while extremely low phosphate leaching and minimal ash content leave pH and water chemistry undisturbed.
The specifications are the same across the range: 0.6 to 2.3 mm flakes at 0.48 g/mL, 1,000 m² of surface area per gram, 1.04 mL/g of pore volume, 1,000 mg/g adsorption for small organic molecules and 280 mg/g for large ones, and a phosphate output of 0.000001 g/mL. Red Sea’s general dose is about 100 mL (50 g) per 200 L, changed every one to two months, with 200 mL per 200 L for one week after a treatment. It is rinsed, soaked in RO water until it sinks, and run at 1,000 to 1,500 L/h per 50 g. A filter bag comes in the pack.
Usage & Application
When to Use
- Reefs of 200 to 400 litres: A litre covers five to ten changes at the standard dose.
- Standing carbon: A permanent bag in the sump refreshed every one to two months.
- Clearing tint and odour: Dissolved organics that yellow the water and cut light.
- Media reactors: Flakes sized for a reactor chamber at moderate flow.
How to Use
- Prepare: Rinse under the tap to remove fines, then soak in RO water until it sinks and stops bubbling.
- Dose: About 100 mL per 200 L for general use; double that for a one-week clean-up.
- Set the flow: 1,000 to 1,500 L/h per 50 g in the bag or a reactor, not in a high-pressure jet.
- Change on schedule: Every one and a half to two months, before the carbon saturates and starts taking trace elements.
