Description
D-D Rowaphos 250mL — Ferric Hydroxide Phosphate and Silicate Remover for Marine and Freshwater Aquariums
Phosphate is the nutrient that decides whether a reef grows coral or algae, and Rowaphos has been the reference medium for pulling it out of the water for two decades. D-D Rowaphos 250mL (SKU: DDRP25) is a man-made ferric hydroxide material, chemically engineered and patented for the efficient removal of phosphate, arsenic and silicate from fresh and salt water. Developed in Germany for treating mains water, it is still made from chemically pure raw materials at the ROWA plant in Osnabrück. D-D stresses that it differs physically and chemically from ordinary iron-based media, adsorbing phosphate so that it does not dissolve back into the water once exhausted.
The 250 mL pack, about 250 g, removes 3 ppm of phosphate from 1,000 L of salt water or 2,000 L of fresh water, the medium being roughly twice as effective in freshwater. A media bag is included, but D-D calls a fluidised reactor the easiest and most effective way to run it, tumbling gently so nothing escapes into the tank. For a reactor the medium is washed in RO water to remove fines; in a bag or canister it is not washed, since washing removes active material, and any brown tint clears with good flow. Testing is the only replacement guide: change it when phosphate rises again.
Usage & Application
When to Use
- Reef tanks with nuisance algae: Hair algae, film algae and cyanobacteria fed by phosphate.
- Coral growth stalls: Phosphate inhibits calcification, and D-D quotes a reduction of over 50%.
- Silicate control: Diatom blooms in new tanks or on silicate-rich tap water.
- Freshwater and planted tanks: Algae control where phosphate runs high, at twice the marine capacity.
Placement & Flow Guide
- Reactor first choice: Rinse in RO water, then fluidise gently so the grains barely tumble.
- Bag or canister: Do not wash; layer the supplied bag between sponge or floss for even flow and disturb it occasionally to stop compaction.
- Keep it damp: The medium must stay moist in storage and use; drying reduces its capacity.
- Test, then replace: Change the medium when phosphate readings start to climb; small amounts changed regularly work best.
Product Specifications & Highlights
Key Features
- Patented ferric hydroxide: Made only by ROWA, from chemically pure raw materials, in Germany.
- Binds without leaching: Adsorbed phosphate stays on the medium when it is exhausted.
- Phosphate, silicate and arsenic: Three contaminants from one medium.
- Independently tested: Berlin Technical University found competing media reached only 30 to 40% of its capacity by weight.
- Media bag included: Ready for a sump or canister straight from the tub.
