Seachem Purigen 250mL (SKU: 724963-166) is a high-grade macro-porous synthetic polymer resin engineered to remove soluble and insoluble organic impurities from aquarium water. Unlike conventional ion-exchange resins or activated carbon, Purigen selectively adsorbs nitrogenous organic waste—such as protein compounds, tannins, and decaying plant waste—before they convert into toxic ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate.

Possessing exceptional capacity due to its microscopic pore geometry, Purigen enhances water clarity and eliminates tea-colored water tinting. As it adsorbs organics, the spherical beads darken from light beige to dark brown, serving as a visual indicator for regeneration. Purigen can be restored using household bleach, making it an economical, long-term filtration solution.

Usage & Application

When to Use

  • Organic Waste Control: Use in heavily stocked community tanks, reef aquariums, or planted setups to control organic waste.

  • Tannin & Colour Removal: Ideal for removing yellow/brown discolouration caused by driftwood or leaf litter.

Placement & Usage Guide

  • Place media into a fine mesh media bag (such as Seachem The Bag) and position in canister filters, power filters, or sumps.

  • Regeneration Process: Soak saturated brown resin in a 1:1 household bleach-to-water solution for 24 hours. Rinse thoroughly, then soak in water containing 2 tbsp of Prime per cup of water for 8 hours before re-use.
