Description

Absolute Cleantech filter; 1700L/hr, 32W — External canister filter for medium to large freshwater and marine aquariums

Once a tank passes about 300 litres, a hang-on or internal filter runs out of media space long before it runs out of flow. Absolute Cleantech filter; 1700L/hr, 32W (SKU: X1700) is the middle model in Absolute’s Cleantech range of external canister filters, rated at 1,700 litres per hour on a 32 W motor. The canister sits in the cabinet under the aquarium, draws water down through an intake pipe, passes it through stacked media for mechanical, biological and chemical filtration, and pumps it back up through the return. Keeping the filter outside the tank leaves the display free of equipment and puts a much larger volume of media to work than any filter hung on the glass.

Rated flow is measured with no media and no hose resistance, so delivered flow is always lower once the canister is packed and plumbed. On the common rule of four to five turnovers an hour at rated flow, the 1,700 L/h model suits aquariums of roughly 340 to 420 litres, such as a 4 ft community, cichlid or planted tank. At 32 W it draws about 0.77 kWh a day. Fill the media in the usual order, coarse sponge first, then biological media and a finer pad or carbon last, and service it every four to eight weeks, rinsing sponges in old tank water rather than tap water so the bacteria survive. Prime and seal the canister according to the instructions in the box before switching on.

Usage & Application

When to Use

  • 4 ft aquariums: Displays in the 340 to 420 L range.
  • Heavier stocking: Cichlids, goldfish and larger community fish that produce more waste.
  • Clean-looking displays: Only the intake and return pipes are visible in the tank.
  • Upgrading filtration: Replacing an internal or hang-on filter that no longer keeps up.

Installation & Setup Guide

  • Position below the tank: Stand the canister in the cabinet, below the water line.
  • Load the media: Coarse sponge first, biological media next, fine pad or carbon last.
  • Connect and prime: Fit the hoses, fill the canister and prime as the instructions describe.
  • Check for leaks: Watch every connection for an hour before leaving it to run.
