Big fish make big waste, and a 5 ft display stocked with oscars, Malawi cichlids or a marine fish community needs a filter that keeps pace day after day. Absolute Cleantech filter; 2100L/hr, 52W (SKU: X2100) is the top model of Absolute’s Cleantech external canister filters, rated at 2,100 litres per hour from a 52 W motor. Water is drawn from the aquarium into the canister, pushed through layers of mechanical, biological and chemical media, and returned to the tank, with the filter body tucked away in the cabinet below. It has the highest flow and power of the three Cleantech sizes, intended for the largest aquariums the range covers.

A canister’s rated flow is a figure without media or plumbing, so the water actually delivered falls as sponges load up and hoses lengthen; the extra headroom of this model helps keep good circulation between services. On the familiar guide of four to five turnovers an hour at rated flow, 2,100 L/h suits aquariums of about 420 to 525 litres, such as a 5 ft tank. Running cost is around 1.25 kWh a day at 52 W. The media volume of a large canister is its real strength: a generous biological stage supports heavy stocking, while a fine polishing pad keeps the water clear. Clean it every four to eight weeks, rinsing the sponges in removed tank water and leaving the biological media largely undisturbed. Keep a spare impeller on hand for a large tank.

Installation & Setup Guide

  • Cabinet placement: Set the canister on the cabinet floor, below the tank.
  • Layer the media: Coarse to fine, with biological media in the middle.
  • Plumb and prime: Keep hoses short and kink-free, then prime per the supplied instructions.
  • Service gently: Rinse sponges in tank water; replace only part of the media at a time.
