Goldfish, larger livebearers and well-stocked community tanks produce more waste than a small hang-on filter can comfortably handle. Clean Tech Hang on filter 450L,7W (SKU: CT450) is the largest of Absolute’s Clean Tech hang-on-back filters, rated at 450 litres per hour from a 7 W motor. It clips over the rear glass of the aquarium, pulls water up the intake tube, runs it through the media in the filter body and spills it back across the surface, which adds oxygen as it returns. On the guide of four to five turnovers an hour at rated flow, it suits aquariums of roughly 90 to 110 litres, such as a 2.5 ft or tall 2 ft tank, and gives extra margin to a smaller tank with a heavy bioload.

The 7 W motor uses about 0.17 kWh a day running continuously. Extra flow brings more surface movement, so for long-finned fish or bettas the outlet can be partly baffled with a sponge. Prime the filter before switching on by filling the body with water from the tank, and keep the tank topped up so the return does not splash noisily as the level drops. Rinse the media every two to four weeks in removed aquarium water rather than tap water, and replace sponges or pads only when they start to fall apart, so the established bacteria are kept. Look over the intake strainer at each service; a blocked intake is the most common reason for a drop in flow. The 320 L/h model (CT320) suits smaller tanks. Unplug before any service.
