Description

Cleantech filter; 1060L/hr, 18W with UV light — External filtration with a built-in UV stage for mid-size community aquariums

Green water and a cloudy column usually mean a tank has outgrown its small internal filter, and the next step up is an external unit with room for real media. Cleantech filter; 1060L/hr, 18W with UV light (SKU: X1060UV) is the smaller of the two Cleantech filters sold under the Absolute label, rated at 1,060 litres per hour and 18 W, with a UV light built into the filter. It sits outside the aquarium, usually in the cabinet below, drawing water down through an intake hose, passing it through its media and the UV stage, and returning it through an outlet hose. The UV lamp is the feature that separates it from a plain external filter: water exposed to the light has free-floating algae and other suspended micro-organisms damaged as it passes, which is what clears green water.

A common rule of thumb is to turn the tank volume over four to five times an hour, which puts a 1,060 L/h filter at aquariums of roughly 200 to 260 L, such as a 90 cm or 120 cm community tank. The 18 W rating is the filter’s stated power figure in its name. Because the UV stage works on what is in the water column, it suits freshwater and marine tanks that suffer recurring green water, and it does not replace mechanical or biological media. UV should be switched off while dosing live bacteria starters or medications that the light can break down, and the lamp itself is a consumable that loses output over time. Its larger sibling, the 1700 L/h, 32 W model (X1700UV), is the one to look at for tanks over about 300 L.

Usage & Application

When to Use

  • Tanks of about 200 to 260 L: Enough flow for four to five turnovers an hour in a mid-size aquarium.
  • Recurring green water: The UV stage targets free-floating algae that media alone will not remove.
  • Upgrading from an internal filter: Moves the filtration hardware out of the display.
  • Fish-only marine or freshwater: One external unit for either water type.

Installation & Setup Guide

  • Position below the tank: Stand the filter in the cabinet so the hoses run downhill to it.
  • Load and rinse media: Rinse the media in tank water, never tap water, before it goes in.
  • Prime before power: Fill the filter with water first so the pump never runs dry.
  • Use the UV with care: Switch the UV off when dosing bacteria or medications, and never look directly at the lamp.
