A marine tank without a sump still needs its dissolved organics pulled out before they break down into nitrate and phosphate, and a hang-in skimmer is the usual answer. Aqua Medic EVO 501 Internal Protein Skimmer (SKU: AM410018) is Aqua Medic’s motor-driven internal skimmer for marine aquariums up to 250 L, built around the DC Runner 800 pump. In the EVO 501 that pump works with a 3D needle wheel, which Aqua Medic says delivers a large amount of air and an optimum bubble structure, and it draws no more than 7 W. Polished ceramic bearings and shafts are used for quiet, low-maintenance running, and an included silencer on the air intake keeps operation almost soundless, according to the maker.

The skimmer works on the usual principle: the pump mixes tank water with air, the needle wheel breaks it into fine bubbles, organic compounds cling to the bubble surfaces in the reaction tube, and the resulting foam rises into the cup.
