A small tank still needs filtration, but an internal filter can take up a third of the swimming space in a nano. Hang on filter 4W, 330L/Hr (SKU: SMX350) is the smallest hang-on-back filter in the Absolute range, rated at 330 litres per hour on 4 W. It hangs over the back rim of the aquarium with only the intake tube in the water: a small pump draws water up the tube into the filter box, through the media, and lets it spill back into the tank over a lip. That keeps the hardware outside the display, puts the media where it can be lifted out without wetting an arm, and adds surface movement as the water returns, which helps gas exchange in small tanks.

Following the common guide of four to five turnovers an hour, 330 L/h suits aquariums of roughly 65 to 80 L, from a 45 cm nano up to a 60 cm standard tank. At 4 W it is cheap to run around the clock, which is how filters should be run so the bacteria in the media are fed with oxygenated water. The filter box needs to be filled with water before it is switched on so the pump primes and does not run dry, and the tank kept topped up so the intake stays submerged. Rinse the media in tank water during water changes rather than under the tap, which would kill the beneficial bacteria. For bigger tanks the 750 L/h, 7 W model (SMX750) runs on the same principle.
