Description

Hang on filter 750L/Hr, 7W — Higher-flow hang-on-back filter for medium community aquariums

A three-foot community tank with a busy stocking list needs more flow than a nano filter can give, without the cost and plumbing of an external canister. Hang on filter 750L/Hr, 7W (SKU: SMX750) is the larger hang-on-back filter in the Absolute pair, rated at 750 litres per hour on 7 W. It clips over the rear glass with its intake tube in the tank and the filter box outside, pumping water up into the box, through the media and back over a spillway. More than double the flow of the small model means more water through the media each hour and stronger surface movement, which counts in warmer tanks where oxygen levels drop.

With the usual target of four to five turnovers per hour, 750 L/h is suited to aquariums of about 150 to 190 L, a range that covers most 90 cm tanks and smaller four-foot setups. In heavily stocked or goldfish tanks it can be run on the smaller end of that range for extra margin. Seven watts is a modest draw for a filter that runs day and night. Setup is the same as any hang-on filter: hang it level on the rim, fill the box with tank water, then switch on so the pump primes. Keep an eye on evaporation, since a dropping water level increases the spill noise and can starve the intake. Rinse the media in old tank water when flow slows. For tanks under about 80 L the 330 L/h, 4 W model (SMX350) is more suitable.

Usage & Application

When to Use

  • Medium tanks: Aquariums of about 150 to 190 L, typically 90 cm.
  • Busy community stockings: More flow through the media for a heavier bio-load.
  • Warm tanks: Surface movement that helps keep oxygen levels up.
  • Supplementing a canister: Extra mechanical and biological capacity on larger tanks.

Installation & Setup Guide

  • Mount level: Hang the filter square on the back rim so it spills evenly.
  • Prime it: Fill the box with tank water before plugging in.
  • Watch the water line: Top up evaporation to keep the intake submerged and noise down.
  • Service by flow: When flow drops, rinse the media in removed tank water.
