Description
Mantis Media Reactor – Mr150 — Mid-size up-flow reactor for carbon, GFO and bio-pellets on growing reefs
As a reef system grows past its starter tank, the carbon or GFO dose that once fitted in a hang-on reactor stops keeping pace, and the next step up needs a bigger chamber rather than a second small one. Mantis Media Reactor – Mr150 (SKU: MA069402) is the mid-size Mantis up-flow reactor, built in hand-crafted 100% acrylic for activated carbon, GFO or bio-pellets on tanks up to about 800 L. Water enters at the base and is pushed upward through the media bed by a dedicated pump connected via adjustable 20 mm hose barbs, so the whole flow is forced through the chamber rather than slipping past loosely packed media the way it would in a filter sock. The design needs no extra fittings to assemble beyond the hose connections.
The Mr150’s chamber holds about 2,500 mL of media, nearly double the smallest Mr100, in a body measuring roughly 160 × 160 × 420 mm. Mantis suggests a pump around 4,000 L/H to drive it, a step up from the Mr100’s 2,000 L/H that matches the larger media volume and keeps the bed tumbling rather than packing solid or blowing apart. The acrylic housing is scratch and discolouration resistant, and since the reactor itself has no motor, it draws no power of its own and simply runs off whatever external pump is feeding it. It sits between the compact Mr100 (SKU: MA069401) and the larger Mr200 (SKU: MA069403) in the same range, sharing the same up-flow mechanism at a capacity suited to a tank that has outgrown the smallest size.
Usage & Application
When to Use
- Growing reef systems: Tanks around 500 to 800 L that have outgrown a smaller reactor.
- Heavier GFO or carbon loads: A larger media volume for systems needing more chemical filtration capacity.
- Bio-pellet reactors: Running a bigger pellet volume at a flow rate the bed can tumble in.
- Stepping up from the Mr100: Upgrading media capacity without jumping straight to the largest size.
Installation & Setup Guide
- Position the reactor: Stand it beside the sump with room for the hose run from the pump.
- Connect the hose barbs: Fit 20 mm hose from the pump outlet to the reactor’s inlet barb.
- Load the media: Rinse carbon, GFO or bio-pellets before packing the chamber.
- Dial in the flow: Run a pump near 4,000 L/H and adjust the outlet until the media tumbles without hammering the lid.
Product Specifications & Highlights
Key Features
