Description
New Life Spectrum Algaemax Medium 300g — 2 to 2.5 mm vegetable pellet for a community of mid-size herbivores
A Malawi tank with a dozen mbuna eats its way through a small jar in days, and the staple needs to be a pellet big enough for each fish to take in one bite. New Life Spectrum Algaemax Medium 300g (SKU: 102322) is the 300 g jar of New Life Spectrum’s AlgaeMax diet in the Medium 2 to 2.5 mm sinking pellet, made in the USA by New Life International. The formula rests on the maker’s Spectrum Nutrition Formula and a stated basket of nine aquatic vegetables, aimed at herbivores but described as suitable for omnivores. Krill, squid and fish add marine protein that New Life Spectrum says mimics the zooplankton and invertebrates in a wild herbivore’s diet.
Guaranteed minimums are 34% crude protein and 8% crude fat, with 8% maximum fibre and 10% maximum moisture; the vitamin pack is guaranteed at 10,000 IU/kg vitamin A, 3,500 IU/kg vitamin D and 400 IU/kg vitamin E. Seaweeds, kelp and spirulina come first in the ingredients, with astaxanthin and marigold included as natural colour sources and tocopherols as the preservative. New Life Spectrum recommends feeding twice daily, only as much as is eaten in about a minute. The 300 g size is the working jar for a single well-stocked tank or two smaller ones, and the pellet is the right diameter for adult bristlenose plecos, larger livebearers and moderate-size tangs. Smaller fish should be kept on the Regular pellet, and larger plecos can move to Large.
Usage & Application
When to Use
- Mbuna and herbivorous cichlids: A plant-based daily pellet for rock-dwelling grazers.
- Adult bristlenose and similar plecos: A pellet that holds up on the substrate overnight.
- Marine herbivore systems: Mid-size tangs and surgeonfish fed by pellet as well as nori.
- Everyday staple: A green base diet with frozen or live foods added during the week.
Feeding Guide
- Two feeds a day: Offer only what disappears in about a minute.
- Spread the pellets: Scatter across several spots so dominant fish cannot guard the food.
- Use a working jar: Keep the 300 g jar sealed and dry between uses.
- Watch condition: Reduce the portion if fish stay round-bellied between feeds.
