Feeding corals regularly is a long game, and a reef that gets a daily dose of plankton-sized food will use a trial pack quickly. New Life Spectrum Reef Cell Small 40g (SKU: 102345) is the 40 g pack of the small grade of Reef Cell, New Life Spectrum’s microencapsulated food with particles of 10 to 80 microns. A retailer listing states that 80% of those particles are 50 microns or less, which is the scale of most zooplankton and phytoplankton. The capsules are neutrally buoyant, so they stay suspended where polyps and filter feeders can reach them, and according to the maker the microcapsule structure keeps the food stable and limits nutrient loss into the water.

This grade is aimed at filter-feeding invertebrates and small polyp corals. The ingredients include whole Antarctic krill, giant squid, menhaden fish, fish oil, wheat flour, garlic, ginger, bentonite clay, sea salt, chlorella, spirulina and other seaweeds, with astaxanthin, marigold, capsanthin and zeaxanthin as pigment sources. Guaranteed analysis is crude protein 55% minimum, crude fat 10% minimum, crude fibre 8% maximum, moisture 10% maximum and ash 12% maximum, with vitamin A at 10,000 IU/kg, vitamin D at 3,500 IU/kg and vitamin E at 400 IU/kg minimum. The directions are to feed up to twice daily in an amount the animals can eat in about a minute, pre-mixed in a cup of tank water for 30 seconds and added with return pumps and high-flow powerheads off. A measuring spoon is not supplied. The 40 g pack gives more doses per purchase than the 15 g size.
