The Spec V has been the default desktop aquarium for a decade because it hides everything that is not fish or plants. Fluval Spec Aquarium 19ltr Black (SKU: SPEC02) is Fluval’s 19 litre (5 US gal) all-in-one kit: a glass tank with a cover, a rear filtration compartment concealed behind a honeycomb wrap, a circulation pump and a high-output 7000K LED in a waterproof all-aluminium casing with touch-switch operation. Fluval says the current LED is 20 per cent brighter than before, with 37 LEDs producing 821 lumens at 10 W, and the Spec series is pitched at anyone who wants a small aquarium with big features.

Filtration is a 3-stage system with oversized media: a foam filter block with a handle for mechanical cleaning, an activated carbon insert for chemical polishing and a BIOMAX insert for biological filtration, all sitting in the rear chamber where a pump rated at 210 to 300 L/h returns water through an adjustable twin output nozzle. The tank measures 49.5 × 16.5 × 29 cm, is engineered in Germany and is for freshwater only: a natural home for a betta, dwarf shrimp, a shoal of nano fish or a low-light planted scape. A removable cover gives access to the rear chamber, and Fluval offers a two-year warranty. Heater sold separately.

Usage & Application

When to Use

• Desktop and office aquariums: A 50 cm footprint with equipment out of sight.
• Betta and nano fish: One betta, a shrimp colony or a small shoal of rasboras or tetras.
• Low to medium light planted tanks: Fluval suggests Anubias, Java fern and Cryptocoryne under the 7000K LED.
• Nursery and quarantine: A complete filtered system for fry or new arrivals.

Setup Guide

• Rinse and position: Rinse tank, cover and media in fresh water only, and set the tank on a flat, level, sturdy surface away from sunlight and draughts.
• Load the filter: Pump in the rear chamber with the nozzle through the filter wall; carbon in the top foam compartment, BIOMAX in the bottom, foam block lowered by its handle.
• Fill and plant: Substrate first, half fill with treated water, aquascape, then fill completely including the rear compartment; slide the LED into its slot and tighten the screw.
• Cycle and maintain: Cycle before adding fish; rinse foam every 6–8 weeks, replace carbon every 2–4 weeks and BIOMAX every 6–8 months, with 20 per cent weekly water changes.
