The 60 litre Spec is what Fluval calls the brightest member of the Spec family in more ways than one. Fluval Spec Xv Aquarium Black 60ltr (SKU: SPEC11) is the 60 litre (16 US gal) all-in-one kit, with a glass aquarium, a cover that integrates the lighting, a concealed rear filtration compartment behind a honeycomb wrap, and a high-output 7000K LED in a waterproof all-aluminium casing. The light carries 31 LEDs producing 1,272 lumens, rated for 50,000 hours, with a touch switch cycling through white and blue, white only, blue only and off, and it remembers its setting after a power cut.

Filtration is Fluval’s 3-stage system in the rear chamber, with a foam filter block, an activated carbon insert and a BIOMAX insert, fed by a circulation pump rated at 500 L/h and returned through adjustable twin outputs. The tank measures 54.6 × 29 × 43 cm, is engineered in Germany and is for freshwater only; the manual recommends 24 to 27 °C with a heater in the pump chamber, sold separately. Sixty litres allows a proper community of small fish, a larger planted layout or a growing shrimp colony with the equipment hidden. Fluval offers a two-year warranty and replacement parts for every component.

Usage & Application

When to Use

• Small community tanks: Shoals of tetras, rasboras or Corydoras with the filter and pump out of sight.
• Planted layouts: Low to medium light species such as Anubias, Java fern and Cryptocoryne under 1,272 lumens.
• Counters and sideboards: A 55 cm footprint that reads as furniture rather than equipment.
• Stepping up from a nano: The same Spec design with three times the water volume of the 19 L.

Setup Guide

• Site it: A flat, level stand that takes the filled weight, away from sunlight, draughts and heat sources.
• Install the filter: Pump in the corner of the rear chamber with the nozzle through the filter wall; carbon above BIOMAX behind the foam block; optional heater in the pump chamber.
• Fill: Substrate, half fill with treated water, plant, then fill completely; lower the LED into place with the cord through the cover cut-out and connect the transformer.
• Maintain: 20 per cent water change every two weeks, rinse the foam and replace carbon monthly, BIOMAX every 2–3 months, impeller clean every 3–6 months.
