Description
Aquael Moonlight Mini Led Spotlight — Submersible blue LED spotlight for night viewing and coral fluorescence
A bright display light makes nocturnal fish hide and does nothing for the fluorescence in a reef tank, which is why a separate, dim blue source is worth running after the main light goes off. Aquael Moonlight Mini Led Spotlight (SKU: 100388) is Aquael’s small submersible LED spotlight, built around four LEDs on 5 V low-voltage technology for a total draw of about 1 W, producing a strong blue light rather than a white or daylight spectrum. At roughly 4.5 by 3.5 by 5.5 cm, it is sized to sit unobtrusively on the glass or among décor rather than dominate the tank.
It is IPX8 rated, so it can run fully submerged or mounted above the waterline, and it fixes in place with a dual system: a strong suction cup for direct glass mounting, plus a magnetic hanger for attaching it to a hood, pipework or other equipment where a suction cup is less convenient. Aquael markets it for three main uses: simulating moonlight for nocturnal viewing and late feeding, running as an actinic source in small marine or reef set-ups to bring out coral fluorescence, and as a spawning aid for fish that respond to a dim light cycle, which Aquael states it has found effective in its own use, though this is a general observation rather than a guaranteed outcome for every species. Outside the aquarium, the same waterproof fixture can be used as a small accent light.
Usage & Application
When to Use
- Nocturnal fish and night viewing: A dim blue light that does not trigger a daytime response.
- Reef and marine nano tanks: Actinic-style light to enhance coral fluorescence.
- Breeding set-ups: A reduced-light period for species that spawn more readily under subdued conditions.
- Feeding after dark: Enough light to observe fish taking a late feed without a full daylight fixture.
Installation & Setup Guide
- Choose a mount: Use the suction cup for direct glass mounting or the magnetic hanger for fixing to a hood or pipe.
- Position the spotlight: Aim it where it lights the main viewing area without shining directly into the aquarist’s eyes.
- Submerge or mount dry: The IPX8 rating allows either, so it can go above or below the waterline as the layout needs.
- Run on its own switch or timer: Operate it separately from the main light so it can be timed for a moonlight period.
