Tanks between 30 and 50 cm are the awkward middle: too long for a nano clip light, too short for most full-size fixtures. Chihiros Series B II 30cm (SKU: D-CB-30) is the B30 in Chihiros’ B series, a 276 mm aluminium light on extendable feet that reach across tanks from 30 to 50 cm long. It uses the same 24 white and 6 RGB 3-in-1 LEDs as the smaller B20 but draws 20.9 W for a listed 1,292 lumens. Aquasabi’s support team explains that the extra wattage drives each LED harder, which is why the output jumps without more LEDs.

The white LEDs sit along the outer rows and the RGB chips run through the centre to improve colour rendering, all in a body 12 mm high and 56 mm deep. The feet fit glass up to 8 mm, so the B30 suits 30 cm cubes, 36 cm and 40 cm tanks and many 45 cm rimless aquariums. This is the non-Bluetooth model; it switches with the power until a Chihiros Commander 1 controller, sold separately, is added for dimming, timing and sunrise and sunset ramps from the My Chihiros app. Chihiros’ lumen figures are measured in a laboratory and real output can differ, and the light is not designed to run under a closed lid. Aquasabi suggests two lights over tanks deeper than 40 cm with carpets or demanding plants.

• Fit a controller: Connect the Commander 1 inline for app control.
• Dial in output: Start below full power and raise it as plants grow in.
