A hitchhiking crab that picks at corals at night, or a plague of bristle worms in the sand, is hard to remove by hand because the culprit only comes out in the dark. Aqua Medic Pest Trap (SKU: AM50181) is the trap Aqua Medic sells as Trap-pest, a universal trap that removes unwanted bristle worms, crabs and snails from the aquarium automatically, in either freshwater or saltwater. It is baited and left in place, and it does the catching without the keeper having to be there: animals get in easily but are stopped from finding their way back out.

Two different entry systems handle the two kinds of pest. Bristle worms crawl in through a funnel and then cannot find the way out again, while crabs and snails pass through a one-way curtain that lets them in and blocks the return path. The bait goes in from the outside, which means the trap can be recharged without opening the catch chamber or releasing what is already inside. At approximately 15.5 × 7.5 × 8.5 cm, according to Aqua Medic, it is small enough to tuck between rocks or lay on the sand where the pests are active. Since crabs and bristle worms forage after lights-out, the trap is best set in the evening and checked in the morning. Any trapped animals need to be removed from the aquarium promptly, and a bait that is left too long will start to foul the water.

• Empty and rebait: Remove the catch and old bait each morning, then repeat as needed.
