Aquael Gravel Cleaner L — 2-in-1 gravel and glass siphon for standard community aquariums

A 100 to 200 L community tank has enough substrate depth that a nano-sized siphon spends most of a water change half-full. Aquael Gravel Cleaner L (SKU: 101254) is the middle size in Aquael’s three-piece Gravel & Glass Cleaner range, combining a gravel vacuum bell with a glass scraper edge in one 33 cm tube, long enough to reach the bottom of a standard-depth tank while still being easy to control with one hand. The tube bore and the mulm bell are both the same 50 mm and 105 mm dimensions used across the S and Xl sizes, so the only real difference between the three is reach.

Like the rest of the range, it needs no bulb, pump or battery: submerging the tube and shaking it a few times starts the siphon without any mouth-suction, after which the shaped bell lifts mulm and leftover food from the gravel while its moulded edge scrapes algae film off the glass in the same stroke. The flow runs out through a hose fitted to the top of the tube into a bucket, and the length means the whole substrate of a mid-size aquarium can be covered without wading an arm in to the shoulder. Aquael also sells the shorter S (about 26 cm) for nano tanks and the longer Xl (about 66.5 cm) for deep or tall display tanks, all interchangeable in technique. Being a plain mechanical siphon with no electronics, it suits freshwater or marine systems equally.

How to Use

• Submerge the tube: Push it fully under the surface before attempting to start the flow.
• Shake to prime: Move it up and down in the water to start the siphon without sucking on the hose.
• Vacuum the substrate: Work the bell through the gravel, lifting waste as the water drains.
• Scrape in passing: Run the bell’s edge over the glass, then lift the tube clear to stop the flow.
