A weekly wipe of the front glass is a small job until a hand has to go into a tank stocked with shrimp or a betta’s carefully arranged leaves, and that is exactly the job a magnetic cleaner is built to avoid. Mag-float Small (l60 X W31 X H25mm) (SKU: BM100470) is the small size in Gulfstream Tropical Aquarium’s Mag-Float range, a two-piece floating magnet cleaner measuring 60 x 31 x 24.5 mm and rated for glass 4 to 5 mm thick, the wall thickness typical of small to mid-size aquariums. The outer half is moved by hand on the outside of the glass and an abrasive inner pad follows it across the inside surface, lifting algae film without wet hands or a scraper. Gulfstream sizes the Small for aquariums up to roughly 110 to 115 litres, and it is built for both freshwater and marine use.

Newer Small units are made with side rails that accept the Mag-Clip feeding clip (SKU BM100476), which also fits the Long size, so a seaweed sheet or vegetable piece can be held on the same magnet used for cleaning. The same side-rail units accept a stainless steel replacement scraper two-pack (SKU BM100459) for occasional coralline or hard-water-mark removal on glass, although the pad on its own handles routine film algae. If the inner magnet comes away from the glass it floats to the surface rather than dropping into the gravel, so it can be lifted out instead of fished out by hand. The housing is non-toxic plastic over a neodymium magnet pair, and Gulfstream states the magnets do not lose their holding strength with use.
