Limescale and mineral crust build up inside a pump housing or on a heater sleeve long before anyone notices the flow has dropped, and scrubbing alone rarely shifts it. Aqua Medic Variocare 1000ml (SKU: AM100900) is Aqua Medic’s concentrated cleaner for pumps and other freshwater and saltwater aquarium equipment, supplied as a 1,000 mL bottle of concentrate built around amidosulfuric acid with methyl red as a built-in colour indicator. The standard dilution is 100 mL of Variocare to 1,000 mL of water, giving ten litres of working solution from one bottle, and the dose can be increased, or the concentrate used undiluted, for equipment with heavier mineral deposits.

Equipment to be cleaned is left soaking in the solution for a period that depends on how dirty it is, up to a maximum of 24 hours, then rinsed under running water with any remaining residue brushed off; a second soak clears persistent deposits that do not lift the first time. The solution is not a one-use product: it can be reused for further soaks, and the point at which it is exhausted is shown by its own colour, changing from red to yellow as it is spent. Aqua Medic’s own warning is that the cleaner must not enter the aquarium, so equipment should be fully rinsed before it goes back into a running tank, and the label’s main caution is to keep it out of the reach of children (P102), alongside the usual skin and eye irritant precautions for a descaling acid.
