Aiptasia arrives on a rock or frag plug, and weeks later there are dozens. Red Sea Aiptasia X 60ml (SKU: RED187) is Red Sea’s reef-safe answer: a thick adhesive paste made from natural components that forms globules on contact with aquarium water. The Aiptasia senses the material as food and does not retract, takes it in, and the paste seals its oral disc so it cannot release its larvae; Red Sea says that within minutes the anemone implodes, removing both the anemone and its planulae. The 60 mL kit covers roughly 100 Aiptasia, with a syringe and two tips.

Red Sea’s key claims are about safety. The globules do not affect the sessile polyps of corals, so Aiptasia growing inside a coral colony can be dealt with in place, any material not taken in by the anemone is harmless to sessile invertebrates and decays over time without adverse effect, and the product does not affect water chemistry. Red Sea also lists Anemonia majano and Boloceroides as targets. The method is flow off for about 15 minutes, the tip brought slowly to the oral disc and the whole disc covered. A 500 mL refill is available.

Usage & Application

When to Use

• Aiptasia outbreaks: Glass anemones spreading across live rock, glass, overflows or equipment.
• Anemones inside coral colonies: Where scraping or injecting would damage the coral.
• Majano and Boloceroides: Other pest anemones Red Sea lists as targets.
• New rock and frags: Dealing with a single hitchhiker before it multiplies into a colony.

Application Guide

• Prepare: Switch off pumps and flow for about 15 minutes, shake the bottle hard and lock a tip onto the syringe.
• Approach slowly: Draw paste into the syringe and bring the tip to the anemone’s oral disc, releasing small amounts as the tentacles close over it.
• Cover the disc: Spread paste over the whole oral disc so the larvae are sealed in; on small colonies cover the whole patch.
• Finish: Keep seawater out of the bottle when refilling the syringe, flush the syringe with hot water afterwards, and store at room temperature.
