Most reef pests arrive on something the keeper chose to buy, which is why the dip bucket is the most useful piece of quarantine kit. Red Sea Dipx 100ml (SKU: RED646) is the introductory size of DipX, Red Sea’s coral bath for safely introducing new corals and live rock to an aquarium. It is a blend of three essential oils with no inorganic disinfectants, free of elements such as potassium iodide or bromide, and Red Sea describes it as completely safe for all kinds of corals and more effective than any other solution it tested. A 15-minute bath removes hitchhikers including Acropora-eating flatworms, Montipora-eating nudibranchs and Acropora red bugs.

The dose is 10 mL of DipX per litre of aquarium water, a 1:100 dilution, mixed in a clean, dry container and never added to the display. Corals or rock are fully submerged for no more than 15 minutes with a gentle swirl every few minutes, then rinsed in clean seawater and placed in the tank; one bath can be reused for up to four batches within two hours of mixing. That makes the 100 mL bottle about ten one-litre baths, enough for a first try of the routine. Red Sea lists it as safe for SPS, LPS, soft corals, zoanthids, Discosoma and Ricordea, and live rock.

Usage & Application

When to Use

• Every new coral: SPS, LPS, soft corals, zoanthids and mushrooms before they enter the display.
• Live rock: Rock from another tank or a shop system that may carry hitchhikers.
• Known pests: Acropora-eating flatworms, Montipora-eating nudibranchs and red bugs.
• Trying the routine: The 100 mL size for occasional frag purchases and a first quarantine kit.

Dipping Guide

• Mix the bath: Shake the bottle and add 10 mL DipX to 1 L of aquarium water in a clean, dry container.
• Dip: Fully submerge the coral or rock for up to 15 minutes, swirling gently every few minutes.
• Rinse: Lift out, rinse in clean seawater, and place in the aquarium.
• Reuse or discard: Use the same bath for up to four batches, then discard within two hours of mixing; never add DipX to the display.
