Young pairs often spawn before they are fully grown, and in a 60 or 90 cm breeding tank a full-size cone can dominate the space. Discus Breeding Pot Small (SKU: A20S) is the smaller of the two baked-clay spawning cones, made for discus and angelfish. The female lays her eggs in rows on the cone and the male follows to fertilise them; after hatching, the larvae stay attached to the cone for a few more days while the parents fan and guard them. The rough surface of the baked clay helps eggs and larvae stay put, and if any do fall, the egg-collecting edge around the base catches them so the parents can pick them up and return them.

The cone’s shape is designed to stay stable even during the most intensive spawning activity, when a pair is cleaning, laying and chasing other fish away. The small cone suits pairs that are spawning for the first times, smaller angelfish, and tanks where the cone needs to fit among plants or beside a sponge filter. For adult discus that lay long rows of eggs, the large cone (A20L) gives more surface. Angelfish pairs that have been laying on a leaf or the glass will often move to a cone placed nearby, especially once the old site is cleaned or removed. Because fired clay is porous, it should be cleaned only with water and a brush; detergent can soak into the surface and later leach into the tank. Many breeders keep one cone per breeding tank so pairs always have a familiar site.
