Description
Discus Breeding Pot Large — Tall clay spawning cone with egg-catching rim for discus and angelfish pairs
A bonded discus pair will clean and spawn on whatever vertical surface they choose, and if that is the filter intake or the heater, the eggs are as good as lost. Discus Breeding Pot Large (SKU: A20L) is a fired clay spawning cone that gives the pair a better option: a tall, tapering surface with a slightly rough finish that eggs and newly hatched wrigglers can grip. A rim around the base catches any eggs or larvae that fall, so the parents can pick them up and return them to the cone. The large cone is listed at about 23 cm tall with a base of roughly 12.5 cm, tapering to a tip of about 4 cm, and has a small hole at the top so trapped air can escape.
The cone’s weight keeps it standing upright on bare glass or substrate during the cleaning and spawning activity of a pair, without being weighed down or glued. The large size suits adult discus and full-grown angelfish, which lay long rows of eggs and need room to work around the cone; the small cone (A20S) is better for young pairs and smaller tanks. Spawning cones are the traditional choice for both species because the pair can fan the eggs from all sides and the keeper can lift the cone out to hatch the eggs artificially if needed. Rinse in plain water before use, and never use detergent or soap on it.
Usage & Application
When to Use
- Adult discus pairs: A tall spawning surface sized for mature fish.
- Angelfish breeding: A vertical site that stops pairs spawning on glass or equipment.
- Artificial hatching: The cone can be lifted out with the eggs and placed in a hatching container.
- Bare-bottom breeding tanks: Stands steadily on glass without substrate.
Placement & Care Guide
- Rinse first: Wash in warm water only before it goes in the tank.
- Choose a quiet spot: Place it away from strong filter outflow, often towards the back or corner.
- Leave it in place: Pairs usually clean the cone for a day or two before laying.
- Clean between spawns: Scrub off old eggs and algae with a brush and hot water, no chemicals.
