A lawn of fine grass at the front of the tank is the hardest planted look to keep: it needs strong light, carbon dioxide and constant trimming, and it fails in tanks with digging fish. Nisso Soft Ornament Hairgrass (nap-601) (SKU: 124661) is Nisso’s artificial hairgrass, one of the Soft Ornament plants from the Japanese aquarium brand, with thin grass-like blades that imitate the foreground plants known as hairgrass. The Soft Ornament name points to a flexible, soft-textured plant rather than a stiff one, and thin blades of this kind are meant to sway in the water flow.

Hairgrass in nature grows as a short, dense sward, so this ornament is placed in the foreground or midground, in clusters that overlap slightly to suggest a lawn. It does not photosynthesise, so it will not grow, spread or need fertiliser, and it will not melt if the lighting is changed. Grass-like blades trap detritus more than broad leaves do, so plan on a gentle rinse or a swish in tank water at each water change. Rinse the piece in plain tap water before it goes into the tank, and keep soap and chemical cleaners away from it.
