Sword plants are the traditional centrepiece of a freshwater tank, with broad, lance-shaped leaves that spread from a central crown, and they are also heavy feeders that outgrow smaller tanks. Nisso Soft Ornament Sword Medium (nap-608) (SKU: 124662) is the medium size of Nisso’s artificial sword plant in its Soft Ornament range, from the Japanese aquarium brand. It copies the broad-leaved habit of the sword plants (Echinodorus) in a soft-textured form that needs no light, carbon dioxide or root tabs and does not grow beyond the size it is sold at. The medium is intended as a midground plant, with the larger Soft Ornament Sword Large (nap-611, SKU 124664) used behind it.

Because it is the medium size, it suits tanks where the large sword would dominate the layout, and it works equally well as the lead plant in a small tank or as a supporting plant in a bigger one. Broad leaves give the piece a strong silhouette, so it is set slightly off-centre in front of the back glass, with smaller grasses or low plants in front of it.
