All-in-one nano tanks ship with a return pump that is too loud or too weak, and swapping it is the first upgrade most owners make. Aqua Illumination Axis 20 Centrifugal Pump (SKU: HYAX20) is the smallest of AI’s Axis DC pumps, a submersible unit delivering about 700 L/h with a maximum head of around 1.5 m from a variable 12 W. AI sizes it for aquariums up to about 57 L and points to all-in-one systems as its natural home. The body is 54 mm across and 140 mm tall, and 12 mm and 16 mm barbed nozzles are included to suit the return plumbing most nano tanks already have.

The driver is integrated on the cord and the pump is controlled from its button or through the myAI or Mobius app, where a schedule can vary flow over time, feed mode slows the pump for ten minutes so food is not swept into the overflow, and calibration sets minimum and maximum flow. In a back-siphon the pump keeps running without producing flow instead of shutting off; two to five seconds on the button starts feed mode and six seconds turns it off. AI notes the Axis also suits UV sterilisers and reactors. Only the pump is waterproof, and the teal rubber feet must be fitted or flow drops sharply.
