Aquarium Systems calls Reef Crystals the first formulation of enriched sea water, made with raw ingredients from prehistoric salt mines in Lorraine, France, and enriched beyond standard sea salt with additional calcium, trace elements and vitamins, plus a neutraliser for heavy metals carried in household tap water.

The added calcium is there for reef organisms forming shells and skeletons, and Aquarium Systems describes the salt as rich in calcium and magnesium, to the point that it may eliminate the need for additional calcium in some systems. It reaches and maintains the correct pH quickly, mixes clear in a few minutes and is ready to use, with each batch analysed for element levels. At roughly 33 g per litre the 20 kg bucket can fill a new 400 to 500 litre system, or cover about 24 changes of 25 litres. Store the bucket closed between uses so the salt stays free-flowing, and confirm every batch with a refractometer before it goes into the tank. Mixing the new water a few hours ahead, with a pump and heater running, lets it reach tank temperature and settle before use.
