The blue bucket is one of the most used reef salts in the world, and the refill box is the same salt without the plastic. Red Sea Salt 20kg Refill Box 600ltr (SKU: RED129) holds 20 kg of Red Sea Salt in a compact cardboard box, enough for about 600 L of seawater, to be used straight from the box or tipped into an existing bucket. Red Sea positions this as its premium-grade, moderate-alkalinity salt, mixing to 8 dKH with calcium at 430 ppm and magnesium at 1,310 ppm at 35 ppt, which it calls ideal for all reef aquarium types and especially SPS-dominated tanks.

The sodium chloride in Red Sea Salt is harvested by solar evaporation of Red Sea water and makes up more than 72 per cent of the mix, carrying 45 naturally occurring elements, with the remaining elements blended in and every batch checked by ICP analysis. Red Sea lists it as all-natural with a full complement of trace elements, no nitrates or phosphates, no chemical binders and low moisture. The formula dissolves in about 20 minutes, and the mixing rule is RO water at or below 20 °C, salt added to water, no aeration, half an hour to two hours and never more than four.

Usage & Application

When to Use

• Weekly water changes: 10 per cent a week on reefs of any type, or up to 30 per cent when changes are less frequent.
• SPS and mixed reefs: Moderate 8 dKH alkalinity suited to tanks on daily Foundation dosing.
• Refilling the bucket: Topping up an existing Red Sea Salt bucket at lower cost and with less plastic.
• Fish-only and new tanks: A natural-level salt where raised elements are not needed.

Mixing Guide

• Start with cool RO water: About 20 °C and never warmer; add salt to water, not water to salt.
• Mix without air: A submerged pump for 0.5 to 2 hours until clear and pH sits at 8.2 to 8.5; do not exceed 4 hours.
• Warm and check: Heat to 25 °C and read salinity on a seawater refractometer, adjusting with salt or water.
• Use within a week: Store mixed water sealed and dark; keep dry salt closed to stop clumping, and never mix in a tank with animals.
