SPS keepers are the most cautious about changing salt, and a small pack is how most of them test one. Quantum SPS Macro Probiotic Salt 2.2kg (SKU: QA070220) is the trial size of the Reef Essential blend formulated for acropora, montipora and other small-polyp stony corals, mixing about 63 L at 34.6 g per litre for a specific gravity of 1.025, or around 61 L at 36.0 g per litre for 1.026. The salt is a hybrid, with sodium chloride sourced from natural South Australian seawater and the other elements added synthetically.

What sets the SPS blend apart is lower alkalinity. At 1.025 the mix is designed for about 405 ppm calcium, 7.4 dKH, 1,230 ppm magnesium and 375 ppm potassium, and at 1.026 for 420 ppm, 7.7 dKH, 1,280 ppm and 390 ppm, close to natural seawater and suited to low-nutrient systems where high alkalinity burns tips. Each bag carries a batch ICP report so the keeper can see what was in the salt before it goes in the tank. Natural macrobiotics, probiotics and vitamin precursors are part of the formula, added by the manufacturer to support beneficial bacteria and fish vitality.

Usage & Application

When to Use

• Trying an SPS salt: A few changes on a small pack before moving a sensitive acropora tank to a new mix.
• Nano SPS tanks: Small displays of montipora, stylophora and acropora frags.
• Frag and grow-out tanks: Small volumes that should match an SPS display’s parameters.

Mixing & Application Guide

• Weigh for your gravity: 34.6 g per litre for 1.025, or 36.0 g per litre for 1.026.
• Salt into water: Add the salt to RODI water at around 25 °C and circulate with a pump until it is fully dissolved; never water onto salt.
• Let it settle: Allow the temperature to stabilise before reading the gravity with a refractometer.
• No dry dosing: Salt that has not completely dissolved never goes into the tank.
