Betta tanks are small, and a full-size planted substrate is both too much and too coarse for them. Fluval Betta/shrimp Stratum 800gm (SKU: NAN28) is Fluval Betta Stratum, the newest member of the Stratum line: Japanese volcanic soil in fine 1 to 3 mm granules, infused with beneficial bacteria to improve biological filtration and water quality from the first fill. Fluval says the granule size is ideal for bettas because uneaten food remains accessible on the surface, the smooth texture helps protect delicate betta fins, and the dark colour creates a rich backdrop that accentuates a betta’s colours. It is for smaller freshwater aquariums.

The soil carries the Stratum benefits in a betta-sized bag: a mix of plant-friendly nutrients, minerals and trace elements for healthy plant development and vigorous growth, lightweight non-compacting granules that let roots develop, and support for a neutral to slightly acidic pH. Fluval adds that Betta Stratum softens water naturally by reducing carbonate hardness and will not stain the water, helping control organic discolouration. Coverage from Fluval is one bag for the 10 litre Betta Kit and two bags for the 22.7 litre kit, which also suits small shrimp tanks of the same size. The bacteria are dormant in the pack and reactivate once the soil is in aquarium water.

Usage & Application

When to Use

• Betta tanks of 10 litres: One bag gives a standard betta kit its full substrate.
• Nano shrimp and planted cubes: Two bags for a 20 to 23 litre tank with live plants.
• Hard tap water: Where a gentle reduction in KH toward soft, slightly acidic conditions is wanted.
• New setups: The bacteria give a freshly filled nano a head start on cycling.

How to Use

• Rinse gently: In a colander, without agitating, to remove fine dust.
• Add before water: Spread 2 to 3 cm, fill halfway, plant, then fill completely.
• Feed on the surface: The 1–3 mm granules keep pellets accessible, so a betta can pick up what it misses.
• Clean lightly: Hover a small gravel cleaner above the soil rather than pushing into it; keep it freshwater only.
