Plain gravel holds roots but feeds nothing, which is why a small planted tank on gravel so often stalls after the first month. Golden Tree Aqua Soil Black 3L (SKU: GT-SOIL-3L) is a granular aquarium soil made from a mix of fertile volcanic ash, natural soil and clay rich in humic acids, sold as a highly fertile substrate made from 100% natural ingredients. It carries the main plant nutrients nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium together with trace elements including calcium, magnesium, iron and manganese, so rooted plants draw food straight from the bed. The granules are black, which sets off green plants and red shrimp, and the 3 L bag is sized for nano and small aquariums.

Golden Tree’s production process yields a dry granule described as cleaner and harder than other substrates, with few foreign materials, so the water stays clear from the moment the tank is filled. It is ready to use and needs no rinsing, and it is described as shrimp safe, which makes it a fit for dwarf shrimp tanks as well as planted community setups. To work out how much is needed, multiply the length, width and depth of the layer in centimetres and divide by 1,000 to get litres: 3 L lays about 5 cm deep under a 30 × 20 cm base, or about 3 cm deep across a 40 × 25 cm footprint. A taller back slope uses more. Keep unused soil sealed in a cool, dry place out of the sun. It is a freshwater substrate and is not intended for marine aquariums.

Substrate & Placement Guide

• No rinsing: Pour it straight from the bag into the empty, dry tank.

• Direct the outlet: Aim the filter return away from the soil so it is not scoured.
