Description

Nature Soil 9L 2-4mm — Japanese aqua soil in a 2 to 4 mm granule for planted aquariums

A planted tank of 60 cm or more needs a substrate bed deep enough for stem plants and crypts to root into, with granules large enough to keep water moving through it. Nature Soil 9L 2-4mm (SKU: NAT9L) is the 9 L bag of Nature Soil in the coarser of its two grain sizes, granules of 2 to 4 mm. It is made in Japan from natural black soil sourced in Kyushu and enriched with fully fermented organic compost, then formed into durable granules that give beneficial bacteria a large surface to colonise, which the supplier says speeds up biological activation in a new tank.

The soil has a gentle, naturally weak acidity, and its nutrients dissolve gradually, which the supplier says gives steady feeding without triggering early algae such as Spirogyra and cuts down the water changes needed during cycling. It suits most aquatic plants, apart from species needing highly specialised conditions, and the supplier credits it with stronger leaf colour, vigorous rooting and stable long-term growth. The larger granule keeps a deep bed open to water, which is why this grade is the usual choice for the main body of a planted layout. One bag covers a 60 × 30 cm floor at about 5 cm deep, and two bags give a 90 × 45 cm tank a bed of roughly 4.5 cm. Where carpeting plants are planned, the finer 1 to 1.4 mm grade (NAT3L) can cap the foreground.

Usage & Application

When to Use

  • 60 cm planted tanks: One bag beds a 60 × 30 cm floor about 5 cm deep.
  • Larger layouts: Two or more bags for 90 cm tanks and deeper slopes.
  • Base layer: Under a finer capping grade where carpets are planned.
  • Mixed plant and shrimp tanks: A substrate the supplier positions for both plants and shrimp.

Substrate & Placement Guide

  • Lay it unrinsed: Pour it straight from the bag so the granules stay whole.
  • Build a slope: Around 4 to 5 cm at the front rising towards the back for depth.
  • Flood slowly: Pour onto a plate or bag to avoid stirring up the soil.
  • Vacuum lightly: Clean only the surface so the granules are not broken up.
