The API Ammonia Test Kit provides a fast, accurate liquid testing solution for measuring total ammonia (NH3/NH4+) levels in both freshwater and saltwater aquariums. Ammonia is a primary cause of fish stress and mortality, produced continuously through fish waste, uneaten food, and organic decomposition. Even trace amounts of ammonia cause gill damage, respiratory distress, and immune suppression. This salicylate-based test kit measures total ammonia concentrations from 0 to 8.0 ppm, enabling aquarists to identify toxic water conditions early and take corrective action.

Usage & Application

When to Use

• New Tank Setup: Test daily during initial aquarium cycling to monitor ammonia accumulation before stocking fish.

• Routine Monitoring: Test weekly to ensure the biological filter is actively converting waste compounds.

• Adding New Fish: Test whenever adding new livestock to verify that the biological filter can accommodate the increased bioload.

• Troubleshooting Distress: Test immediately if fish exhibit gasping at the surface, inflamed gills, lethargy, or clamped fins.

How to Use

1. Fill a clean test tube with 5 mL of aquarium water up to the marked fill line.

2. Add 8 drops from Ammonia Test Solution #1.

3. Add 8 drops from Ammonia Test Solution #2.

4. Cap the test tube and shake vigorously for 5 seconds to mix thoroughly.

5. Wait 5 minutes for the colour to fully develop.

6. Match the liquid colour against the included freshwater or saltwater colour card to read the ammonia level in ppm (mg/L).
