Red Sea Reef Colours Pro Multi Testing Kit — Iodine, potassium and iron tests for Trace Colours dosing

In an ultra-low-nutrient reef the colour elements cannot be dosed by rule of thumb, so Red Sea built a kit to measure them. Red Sea Reef Colours Pro Multi Testing Kit (SKU: RED258) is the Trace Colours Pro multi test kit, with advanced tests for the high-accuracy measurement of iodine, potassium and iron, the three elements Red Sea associates with many biological functions including coral pigmentation. It enables accurate dosing of three of the Trace Colours supplements, A, B and C, with D following C one-to-one, and Red Sea recommends it specifically for ultra-low-nutrient systems and refugium tanks where uptake must be measured rather than linked to calcium.

The three tests use two methods. Iodine is colorimetric, 0 to 0.09 ppm with 0.01 ppm accuracy and 50 tests, bracketing the 0.06 ppm seawater level; potassium is a titration from 150 to 450 ppm with 3 ppm accuracy and 40 tests, around the 400 ppm reference; and iron is colorimetric from 0 to 0.5 ppm with 0.05 ppm accuracy and 50 tests, covering Red Sea’s 0.15 ppm total-iron target. The case holds iodine reagents A and B and a standard, iron reagents A and B, four potassium reagents, a titrator, a 5 mL syringe and three colour cards, with refills available.

Usage & Application

When to Use

  • Ultra-low-nutrient reefs: Where Trace Colours are dosed to measured uptake, not calcium.
  • Refugium systems: Macroalgae change element demand, so each supplement is tested.
  • Potassium-hungry methods: Zeolite and heavy carbon-dosing tanks that pull potassium below 400 ppm.
  • Before and after dosing changes: Confirming iodine and iron stay within Red Sea’s daily limits.

How to Use

  • Iodine: Colorimetric test against the colour card; hold near 0.06 ppm and add no more than 0.03 ppm a day.
  • Potassium: Titration with the four reagents; aim near 400 ppm, maximum 10 ppm rise a day.
  • Iron: Colorimetric test; target 0.15 ppm total iron, maximum 0.05 ppm a day.
  • Dose and retest: Set Trace Colours A, B and C from the readings, D matched to C, and test weekly.
