Description

Red Sea Seawater Refractometer

High-Accuracy Salinity Measurement for Reef Aquariums

The Red Sea Seawater Refractometer is precision-engineered to measure the absolute salinity of seawater at 25°C / 77°F, the standard operating temperature for reef aquariums. Unlike generic refractometers, it is specifically calibrated for natural seawater (NSW) rather than salt brine, ensuring accurate readings critical for coral health, growth, and coloration.

Why Accuracy Matters

Most hobby refractometers are designed for measuring brine (sodium chloride) at 15°C / 59°F, not seawater. Because seawater contains over 70 dissolved elements—not just sodium chloride—these instruments can produce salinity errors of up to 1.5 ppt, which may negatively impact coral vitality and pigmentation.

The Red Sea Seawater Refractometer eliminates these inaccuracies by reading true seawater salinity at reef-relevant temperatures—without conversion charts or correction factors.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Direct Seawater Salinity Reading
Measures absolute salinity at 25°C / 77°F with no need for adjustment or compensation tables.

  • Designed Specifically for Seawater (NSW)
Calibrated for the full ionic composition of seawater, not salt brine.

  • Reef-Optimised Calibration Temperature
Factory calibrated at 25°C, matching typical reef aquarium conditions.

  • High-Resolution Display
Clear, easy-to-read scale focused on the reef-safe range up to 40 ppt.

  • Integrated Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC)
Ensures accurate readings at standard ambient room temperatures.

Understanding the Display

The PPT scale on the Red Sea refractometer is calculated using a seawater-specific algorithm, providing a true absolute salinity value.

Standard refractometers use a brine-based algorithm, which can result in readings approximately 1.5 ppt lower than actual seawater salinity when used in marine aquariums.

Salinity Explained

Salinity refers to the concentration of dissolved salts in water—but not all salt solutions behave the same optically.

  • Brine: Primarily sodium chloride (NaCl), containing only two elements.

  • Seawater: Contains approximately 70 elements, including calcium, magnesium, potassium, and trace elements.

Because these solutions have different refractive indexes, they must be measured using instruments calibrated for their specific composition.

Refraction & Refractive Index

All transparent liquids bend light differently depending on their composition and concentration. A refractometer translates this light refraction into a salinity reading using a mathematical model designed for a specific liquid type and temperature.

Using the wrong model—such as brine instead of seawater—leads to inaccurate results.

Temperature & Salinity Measurement

The refractive index of water changes with temperature, making temperature calibration essential for accurate readings.

Refractometers calibrated at lower temperatures (e.g. 15–20°C) can produce salinity readings 1–1.5 ppt lower when used at reef temperatures (25°C). This is a common source of error in marine aquariums.

The Red Sea Seawater Refractometer is calibrated at 25°C, allowing direct, accurate readings at standard reef temperatures.

About ATC (Automatic Temperature Compensation)

ATC helps compensate for small differences between ambient temperature and the calibration temperature of the refractometer.

Important to note:

  • ATC corrects for room temperature variation—not aquarium temperature.

  • Large temperature differences can still result in inaccurate readings.

  • For best accuracy, allow the refractometer and water sample to reach similar temperatures before testing.

Ideal For

  • Reef aquariums

  • SPS & LPS coral systems

  • Aquarists requiring precise, reliable salinity control
